Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi has called up seven new faces to the national team preparing to take on Malawi in a Friendly match on April 18 in Machakos.

This has been occasioned with the absence of seven players with five Gor Mahia players having pulled out.

Boniface Oluoch, Musa Mohammed, Harun Shakava, Ernest Wendo and Kenneth Muguna all failed to report to camp on Monday and subsequently, Okumbi was left with no choice but to get replacements.

Gor Mahia decided to pull their players out of next Wednesday’s match because of their league match against Sony Sugar on Saturday in Kisumu. The club though is not compelled to release their players as the match falls out of the Fifa friendly calendar.

Ulinzi Stars left back Omar Mbongi and AFC Leopards forward Mungai Kiongera will also be unavailable.

Kiongera is nursing a knee injury while Mboni will be out of action for up to three months as he is away on a military career progression course.

In their place, Ulinzi right back Brian Birgen and goalkeeper James Saruni have been called in as well as Chemelil Sugar’s Victor Majid and AFC goalkeeper Ian Otieno. National Super League side GFE 105’s Zeka Wakoli, Nzoia Sugar’s Victor Ogedo and Thika United’s Mwinyi Kibwana have all been handed their maiden call ups.

Kenya will be using the match as the beginning of preparation for next year’s African Nations Championship (Chan) and the Football Kenya Federation as announced the team will be playing at least one friendly match each before January 2018.

Meanwhile Malawi’s Flames will arrive in the country on Sunday evening ahead of the Wednesday match.
